『ファイナルファンタジータクティクス - イヴァリース クロニクルズ』では新たにフルボイスとなり、原作の文字だけでは乗せられなかった感情の機微がまざまざと伝わるようになりました。後付けのボイスは大抵既存のイメージと競合するので賛否はあるでしょうが、今作のアルガスは吉野裕行さんの熱演により、劣等感と苛立ち、侮蔑と憎悪が見事に表現され、より鮮烈な印象を残したと言えるでしょう。
今回はそれが大爆発する第1章のクライマックス、ジークデン砦より。ラムザとディリータが袂を分かった運命の場面を読んでいきます。
Dialogue/Ziekden Fortress
ティータを手にかけたアルガスは、激高するディリータと狼狽えるラムザに対し、抱いてきた身分差のコンプレックスをぶちまけます。それは舌鋒鋭く、ベオルブ家の名を放棄するほどにラムザへ突き刺さりました。英語版では身分による力のニュアンスを強調し、メタ的な要素もプラスされています。
Argath：And where do you presume to go, Delita?
Delita：You whoreson dog!
Argath：It is to be a fight, then? I'm only to happy to oblige!
The gods know I've waited for this!
Come! I will show you that common blood makes naught but
a common man!
Whoreson dog：ろくでなし（シェイクスピアが多用）
Oblige：願いを聞き入れる
アルガス：どこへ行こうってんだ、ディリータ？
ディリータ：この外道め！
アルガス：やる気か？喜んで受けて立とうじゃないか！これぞ天の采配って奴だ！
来いよ！平民からは平凡しか生まれないと分からせてやる！
Ramza：Why did you do it, Argath? What moved your hand?
Argath：Your lord brother's order, Ramza. What else?
Would you have had us kneel before them, and offer up
the Order's honor in exchange for the life of some common wench?
Ramza：She was Delita's sister!
Argath：Is it not time you awoke to the fact that
we are different from them?
They are of lesser birth, an so meant to play lesser roles in life!
Such is the nature of fate, Ramza!
That commoner and his sister ought never to have been here at all!
Had they been with their own kind supping on broth of bean,
she would yet live!
Wench：女性に対する侮蔑
Broth：煮汁、出汁
ラムザ：何故やったんだ、アルガス？ なんのために？
アルガス：貴様の兄の命だからだ、ラムザ。他に何が？
それとも奴等に跪いて、そこらの平民のアマと引き換えに騎士の誇りを差し出せって？
ラムザ：ディリータの妹だったんだぞ！
アルガス：いい加減オレたちは奴等と違うって事実を受け入れたらどうだ？
奴等は下賤な生まれ、下賤な役目を一生演じるのが定め！
それが当然の運命ってもんだろ、ラムザ！
あの平民と妹はここにいるべきじゃなかった！
大人しく同類と豆の煮汁を啜ってりゃ死なずに済んだだろうよ！
Argath：Does your naivety know no end? How ironic is fate,
that one such as you would be born a Beoulve!
Despite the privilage the name has afforded you,
you would forsake duty an tarnish the honor of your house!
Mayhap it is because you are youngest, an bastard born besides.
You think yourself spared the burdens of your lord brothers,
and look only to satisfy your own whims!
It brings bile to my throat! 'Tis mockery that you are a Beoulve!
Ramza：My birth was not of my choosing,
nor the burden that come with it! Of such, you ought know!
Argath：Spare me the bleating, you are no sheep!

For your name brings great wealth and influence both.
If you only embrace them, nary a thing would be beyond your reach.
Yet what should you do instead but squander your gifts,
while I must grasp at scraps that come tumbling!
Speak not to me of burdens!
Naivety：世間知らず、純朴
Privilage：特権、恩恵
Burdon：重荷、重責
Whim：気まぐれ、我儘
Bleating：愚痴、泣き言
アルガス：貴様の世間知らずは果てが無いのか？
貴様のような奴がベオルブ家に生まれるなんざ、なんたる運命の皮肉だろうなぁ！
家名の恩恵に与っておきながら、その義務を放棄してベオルブの名を汚そうとしている！
末っ子で腹違いだからな。兄達の重責から免れたと思って、
自分は好き勝手を満たしたいだけか！
全く反吐が出る！貴様がベオルブだなんてとんだお笑い種だ！
ラムザ：僕の生まれも、そのための重責も、僕が選んだ訳じゃない！君なら分かるだろう！
アルガス：泣き言なんざ聞くか！貴様は群れの羊じゃねえ！！

ベオルブの名は富と権力をもたらす。受け入れさえすれば手の届かない者など何一つ無い
だが貴様はその恵みを浪費し、片やオレは転がってくる屑を掴むのに必死！
貴様が重責を語るなッ！
Ramza：Mayhap your speak true...but I will not be made a puppet!
Argath：You? A puppet? Don't be absurd!
The puppets stand before you, Ramza!
Long have we danced for House Beoulve,
that it might reign on history's stage.
A dance that serves our ends, to be sure.
Indeed, the Beoulve name is our shield,
behind whose aegis we've long thrived.
It is the way of things! People are used, and use others in turn.
How do you think you came to be where you are?
You are loath to be used, yet you fain use others.
Even your so-called friend Delita!
Thrive：繁栄する
Loathe：嫌悪する
ラムザ：そうかもしれない…でも僕は操り人形にはなりたくない！
アルガス：貴様が？操り人形？ふざけるなッ！
人形なら目の前にいるぞ、ラムザ！オレたちはベオルブ家の為にずっと踊ってきた。
その名が歴史の舞台で君臨し続けるためにな！
もちろんそれは己の目的のための舞踏さ。
実際、ベオルブの名はオレたちの盾となり、その庇護の下で繁栄を築いてきた。
それが世の仕組みってもんさ！お互い利用し利用される。
貴様が今その地位にいられるのはどうしてだか分かるか？
貴様は利用されるのが嫌だと言いながら、他人は平気で利用する。
友人と呼ぶディリータさえもな！
Argath：Does it grieve you, Delita,
to see the depths of your own weakness laid bare?
No mere commoner can leave their mark on history!
You've not the power!
Be glad you know enough to lament it.
'Tis all you can do, and more than you deserve!
アルガス：貴様の弱さの底が露わになって悔しいか、ディリータ？
平民ごときが歴史に名を刻めるものか！貴様にその力は無い！
嘆ける自覚があるだけありがたいと思えよ。
それが貴様がせいぜいできること、分不相応にもな！
英語版だけの文脈として「歴史」が2箇所に入っていて、歴史を動かし名を残すことこそ貴族の特権であり、平民にはその力も資格も無いというのです。後の歴史を踏まえると、正史として名を残したのは「英雄王」ディリータで、ラムザは「異端者」として抹消され、アルガスの言葉とは真逆のことが起こったというわけです。アルガスの身分や家名の価値観が垣間見えると共に、後世の「史実」に対する皮肉と言って良いでしょう。
